Reasons to take your meetings for a walk

1st May 2019

In light of National Walking Month and the warm weather creeping in, we want to share with you why you should switch out your office meetings in favour of walking meetings. At this time of year we don’t need an excuse to leave the office but the benefits of walking are limitless. So much so that walking meetings are prescribed by Public Health England as a cure for chronic sedentarism in the workplace. Studies show that walking can inspire more productivity and free-flow of thinking than the same activity at a desk. It’s proven that walking is hugely effective for brainstorming ideas and tasks that require creative thinking. What better reason to take your work colleagues out and about? Here’s some tips on how to make your walking meetings as efficient as possible.

Small meetings work best

Stick to no more than 3 people in your meeting. Any more than that and it may feel like you’re trying to herd cats.

Know where you’re heading

Having a destination in mind so that you’re not just walking around aimlessly can bring a sense of direction to the meeting.

Use it to brainstorm

Studies show that walking is a great way to brainstorm new ideas but it’s actually less effective when it comes to making a definitive decision. Try making notes and reading them beforehand so you know the topics your meeting will entail. You could make small notes on your phone then write them up and come to a final conclusion when you get back to the office.

Meetings aren’t the only excuse for a walk

As walking can loosen up the mind and generally make you more relaxed, you don’t just need to limit your walks to meeting. Try a lunchtime walk too! You’ll be back in office with more energy and enthusiasm than any cup of coffee could give you. Try it out and see for yourself!
